Description
An antique French 18K yellow gold mounted hand carved shell cameo brooch pin. Depicting Aurora, the Goddess of Dawn, leading a procession through the clouds. Followed by Apollo, the Sun God, in his four-horse chariot, bringing daylight into a still-sleeping earth. Dancing alongside his chariot are the seven female Horae, 'the Hours', symbolizing the passage of time. A torch-bearing Putto (an ancient personification of the Morning Star) flies above. The scene is after a fresco of Guido Reni's which is displayed in the Palazzo Pallavicini-Rospigliosi in Rome. Mounted in an 18k yellow gold frame. Hallmarked with the French 18K gold standard mark in a form of an eagle's head in use in France from 1838. Having a trombone clasp setting and T-hinged pin. In good antique condition. Brooch measures 2" x 1 5/8". Weighs 13.2 grams.
